We were on a moderate budget so with that in mind we were definitely looking for a cheap flight to Rome!

Luckily I my big sister and her hubby are frequent Europe travelers so they had all the cheap flight tips we needed! They gave us the names of two budget airlines that fly from London to Rome and I started snooping immediately!

If you want to find a GREAT deal on a flight from London to Rome my number 1 tip is to play with the dates! Flight prices can vary as much as 20 pounds from one day to another so as long as you’re relatively flexible with your dates you can get a great deal by testing different departure and arrival days. The two major budget airlines for Europe travel are EasyJet and Ryanair, Andrew and I have only flown Ryanair so far but I’ve heard great things about EasyJet too.

We flew Ryanair from London to Rome for just $300 usd all up aka 2 return airfares! We couldn’t believe we were paying $150 usd each to fly to ROME although I’ve heard that when there’s sales on you can get it even cheaper than that!

Here’s some tips to pick up a really cheap flight to Rome…

* Go budget, honestly for a 1 to 2 hour flight it’s not worth paying through the roof! EasyJet or Ryanair are your best choices to keep the price looking pretty!

* Test out different dates that fit around your travel schedule because you’ll find the airfare price can change rather substantially from day to day.

* Book early, you’ll find fantastic deals if you’re able to book months before your travel time.

* Always check the taxes, the rates you see online might seem cheap but there are always fees on top of that price!

* Triple check what airport you’re flying out of and in to. Some of the budget airlines fly into remote airports that are not anywhere near the main hub of the city you’re visiting. It may be worth the extra trek for a really cheap price but make sure you’ve looked into that too!

One negative about Ryanair, that was an issue for Andrew (not so much for me), is that they REALLY pack you into those planes and the seats are pretty dam tiny! Andrew was not happy when we sat down and his knees were up around his ears but I reminded him we were going to ROME for $150 and he piped down ;-)

Another thing to keep in mind is that with Ryanair you don’t fly out of Heathrow Airport, the airports they use are Gatwick and Stansted which are both out of central London. This wasn’t a big issue for us, we booked a bus ticket online for about $30 usd each (return) and slept the 1.5 hour bus ride from Liverpool Station to London Stansted airport.

So there you have it, finding a cheap flight to Rome is pretty darn simple! Put a bit of time and effort into researching the best option and you’re budget will be VERY thankful!
